3 Ways to Protect Your Hair From the Sun

The UK may not be famous for its long hot summers, but we can still enjoy some fantastic sunny days and scorching temperatures, even if they do seem to happen intermittently! So, while we all know how important it is to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, do we ever spare a thought for our hair and scalp? Your hair needs to be protected just as much as your skin, as, without decent protection, it can become dry and brittle. So how can you make sure it stays healthy during the summer?

#1 – Grab a Hat

The simplest way of protecting your hair and scalp from the sun is to cover them up. A hat is a great way of ensuring your roots stay safe. It’s a good idea to wear a hat anyway during the hottest part of the day (around midday) as it can help to prevent sunstroke as well as protecting your face.

A burnt scalp can be a nightmare for people who are struggling with bald patches or thinning hair as it can actually prevent hair from growing, so it is really important that you protect yourself from the sun!

#2 – Keep Your Hair Moisturised

A day out in the scorching sun can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle as it breaks down the keratin in your hair. This means that you should make sure that you are doing everything you can to lock the moisture in. Use a good conditioner regularly during the summer, and maybe even consider investing in a deep conditioner treatment or a leave-in conditioner.

This also means that you may need to cut back on the shampoo a little. Your hair has natural oils which can make it look greasy, but they also provide natural protection. If you’re really worried about your hair looking greasy, you could always try out a dry shampoo product that won’t strip your hair of its natural oils.

#3 – Use UV Protection

Many people will shy away from the idea of actually using UV protection on their hair and scalp. However, you can find plenty of hair care treatments that are designed to protect your hair from UV rays and won’t leave your hair looking greasy. There are plenty of different options out there, so you may have to experiment with a few different products before you find the right one for you.
