Male pattern baldness can have a huge impact on your self-confidence from the moment you start noticing the signs of hair loss. The way you see yourself may become different as you lose your hair, but that tends to change once you undergo hair loss treatment – it’s likely that you’ll become more confident and self-assured, and that you’ll begin to see yourself in an entirely different light once more.

A Study on Social Perceptions

And now a study has found out that other people may perceive you differently as well, even if at a subconscious level. This study was conducted by Lisa E. Ishii, M.D., M.H.S., a doctor in John Hopkins University School of Medicine, and her co-authors, and aimed to analyse the efficacy of hair restoration in individuals’ social circles.

This was done by surveying 122 people, 48% of which were men. Participants had to rate before-and-after photos of men: seven had had hair transplant procedure and the six who didn’t were the control group. The findings showed just how much hair restoration can have an important role in people’s social success.

How do People Perceive You After Hair Transplant?

While we tend to believe that appearances don’t have much of an impact on how we live our lives, the truth is that people do tend to form perceptions based on them.

Men who had hair restoration procedures were perceived as younger than the men in the control group. Also, they were thought to be 3.6 years younger in their ‘after photo’ than their ‘before photo’. In addition, by undergoing hair loss treatment, these men were perceived as more attractive, successful and approachable than their counterparts.

Why is This Important?

The way people see us influence everything. After all, their perception of you can mean the difference between getting that new job or not, being promoted, negotiating a deal and being successful at a personal level.

So while the way you see yourself is important, since it can allow you to become happier and more confident, the way others perceive you play a vital part in your professional and social life as well. Being seen as more successful can give you great results in the workplace, while being perceived as more attractive can help you at an interpersonal level, for example.
