It’s normal to experience some pain and discomfort in your scalp following your hair implant. This will lessen over the days following the procedure but it’s still important to have a good understanding of how to care for your hair and scalp after you’ve received your implant as well as some ways to help reduce any initial pain or swelling.

Sleep in a Semi-Upright Position

Sleeping with your head elevated for the first few nights after your implant, for example in a reclining chair or with your head propped up on pillows, can help to reduce swelling in your scalp. You’ll find that scabs will begin to form around the implanted area, but it’s important to resist the temptation to scratch or pick at them.

Take Some Time Off

You are advised to avoid physical activity for the first week following your implant. This includes not only light exercise but also any lifting or leaning over. Most patients are able to return to work a day or two after the procedure but it may be beneficial to consider taking some time off, particularly if your job involves any manual work.

Any strenuous exercise such as push ups or bench pressing should be avoided for at least 4 weeks and if you’re a keen swimmer it’s important to avoid the pool for the first 10 days after a DHI session. This is due to the fact that swimming pools contain harsh chemicals and bacteria that can cause harm to your scalp while it’s still healing.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Alcohol should be avoided for 48 hours after your implant, and smoking for a month or more. Smoking can prevent sufficient blood flow to hair follicles which in turn can adversely affect hair growth; therefore a patient would ideally stop smoking altogether, or at least for as long as possible.

Stay Out of the Sun

After the implant your scalp will be very sensitive. Therefore, it’s important to keep your head out of direct sunlight while the area is still healing. If you need to go out into the sun, make sure you wear a hat to protect your scalp from UV rays.
