INCREDIBLE HAIR: UNCOMBABLE HAIR SYNDROME

Human hair is incredible and each person is different. Some people have thick, curly hair and others have fine, straight hair (and everything in between, of course!). However, some hair is more unusual than others, and one five-year-old girl from Derby has one of the rarest hair conditions of all – Uncombable Hair Syndrome.

What is Uncombable Hair Syndrome?

Uncombable Hair Syndrome may sound like something created by Roald Dahl, but it is, in fact, an incredibly rare condition which affects a very small number of people. It is estimated that there are only 100 cases of the condition worldwide at the moment, but you will be familiar with one sufferer in particular. Albert Einstein’s wild locks were actually caused by UHS.

The condition causes hair to be unruly, frizzy and wiry, and it can be particularly uncomfortable to attempt to brush or style the hair which is usually silvery-blond in colour.

More seriously, the hair strands can trap heat, leading to overheating in the body, which can be dangerous and worrying.

What Causes Uncombable Hair Syndrome?

A genetic mutation leads to follicles being heart-shaped rather than round or oval. The genes, PADI3, TGM3 and TCHH provide the coding for proteins that help to form the hair shaft. When these genes mutate, Uncombable Hair Syndrome can occur.

How Can it be Treated?

There is currently no treatment for Uncombable Hair Syndrome, although, in some cases, the hair can improve as a child gets older. However, many of those diagnosed still suffer from the condition as adults.

Using good conditioners can help to improve the manageability of the hair, and harsh hair treatments, such as chemical straightening, are discouraged. The hair is very delicate and can break and tangle easily, so it is important to treat the hair gently.
