What Is Hair and Why Is It Important?

Hair is one of the most important features on our body; it can protect us from dust and particles when considering hair in our nose and ears, decrease the amount of light and particles that get into our eyes, provide our bodies warmth, and protects our skin and scalp.

But is there more to hair than what meets the eye? As hair specialists, we feel that we can answer this question pretty well.

What is Hair?

Hair is a protein filament that grows from small skin organs known as hair follicles. The protein that forms hair is notably in the form of keratin. Keratin helps to protect epithelial cells from damage or stress, which are cells that line the surfaces of blood vessels and other organs.

How is Hair Structured?

Hair consists of several individual parts that all work together to create the hair strands. Firstly, there is the papilla; this is a large structure that is located at the base of the hair follicle. The papilla is responsible for supplying blood, vitamins, and minerals to the hair follicle.

Surrounding the papilla is the hair matrix and bulb, which help to protect the papilla. These portions of the hair follicle are part of a larger structure known as the hair root. The hair root is located beneath the epidermis. The portion of hair located above the epidermis is known as the hair shaft, and this consists of the hair that is visible.

There are also important glands that help to maintain the hair follicles, such as the sebaceous glands, which help to lubricate and waterproof the hair and skin, the apocrine sweat glands, which produce sweat for the skin, and the arrector pili muscles, which help to attach the hair to the skin.

Why is Hair Important?

Hair is important to the growth, protection, and well-being of humans around the world. In terms of growth, hair is important as it can build a person’s confidence, especially when people tend to associate hair with masculinity and confidence. This is particularly noticeable when you compare people that have a full head of hair and people that suffer from male-pattern baldness.

In terms of protection, hair is very important, especially for the scalp and face. The hair on the scalp can protect it from harmful UV radiation from the Sun, and hair on the face, such as the beard, moustache, eyelashes, and eyebrows, help to remove any dirt, dust, and particles from sensitive parts of the facial region.

For wellbeing, hair is very important. Male pattern baldness affects half of all males that are 50 years old, meaning that it is an incredibly common type of hair loss. With hair loss comes self-confidence issues and other problems that need to be addressed as soon as possible.
